Teaching Focus

Dr. Horn specializes in teaching microbiology and molecular biology and its interactions with our world. 聽Committed to nurturing critical thinking and problem-solving skills in her students, she has incorporated teaching strategies for these in her courses. 聽Her Microbiology course includes an undergraduate research component.聽 Many of her students have presented their findings at the HCU Symposium held each spring.聽 She strives to foster an interest in the study of life (biology), to support her students in their quest for knowledge, and to encourage them to be life-long learners.

Awards and Honors

Dr. Horn was honored with the HCU Opal Goolsby Award for Teaching Excellence in 1999 and 2014.聽 She also received recognition as HCU鈥檚 Faculty Woman of the Year in 1999.聽 Her students have honored her several times with recognition in Who’s Who Among American Teachers.聽In 2005, Dr. Horn was the Piper Nominee from the College of Science and Math.聽 In 2007, Dr Horn was named as HCU鈥檚 Outstanding Advisor of the Year.聽 She was awarded the National Academic Advising Association鈥檚 (NACADA) Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Faculty Advising in 2007.

Additional Information

Dr. Horn has researched and published in tumor virology and genetics. Her dissertation focused on the retrovirus, Murine Sarcoma Virus, and its oncogene “src.” 聽While at HCU, Dr. Horn has focused her research and presentations on science teaching strategies to encourage writing and critical thinking skills. She also serves as a reviewer of genetics textbooks and the MicrobeLibrary online Atlas.聽 Presently, Dr. Horn is a part of the writing project at 麻豆视频.

Dr. Horn is the NCAA Athletics Certification Officer for the University.聽 聽She serves on HCU鈥檚 Academic Affairs Committee and has served as the chair of the Medical Professions Advisory Committee and the Human Subjects Review Committee. 聽She also has served as chair of the Cain Science Scholarship Committee and as a member of the Endowed Academic Scholarship committee.聽 She served as a founding member of the HCU Honors College committee.聽 Dr. Horn served as President of the HCU Faculty Assembly in 1995 and again in 2008-2009.

Dr. Horn enjoys working with the pre-optometry students and is the sponsor of HCU-POPS, the pre-optometry student organization.聽 Dr. Horn is also the Faculty Secretary for the HCU Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa.

Dr. Horn has taught at the University of Houston, Alvin Community College and Houston Community College.

Dr. Horn served in 2010-2011 as the president of the Alumni steering committee for the University of Texas at Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.聽 She is also a member of the UTHealth Development Board.

She continues to promote scientific literacy as a consultant for area science fairs. 聽Dr. Horn’s hobbies include learning, reading and photography.
